HALF MARATHON RUNNERS TURN MILES INTO MEALS
Two ex-Hanover and Elm Grove councillors were among a group of local runners who raised over £2,000 for the Phoenix Food Shop, our community-run social supermarket.
David Gibson ran the 13.1-mile Barns Green Half Marathon in West Sussex at the end of September. Fellow half-marathoners included Steve Rooney, who volunteers on the food project, Peter Clarke and Steve Reeves. Alas, the only woman in the group, former ward councillor Elaine Hills, reduced her running distance to 10km on the day, due to a heavy cold, but thankfully this not reduce her fundraising efforts.
David, who is a director of the food shop and helps manage it, said:
“Elaine and I took part in another running event during the pandemic and raised over £2,000 for the project. The food shop has since expanded to meet local need, but at the same time, grants are getting harder to come by. So it’s more important than ever that our community shows solidarity with those at the sharp end of austerity and this sponsored run aims to plug the gap.”
Elaine added:
“The volunteers work extremely hard to provide this vital service to people in the area and it’s important that it continues. Any further donations large or small would be greatly appreciated. Together, we can ensure that no one in our community goes without good quality food. Every pound you give will turn the miles we run into meals for families in need.”
The food project in Phoenix Place supports around 200 people with discounted, nutritious food. The volunteer-led shop provides affordable food for people struggling to meet the cost of putting food on the table. Most live on the Phoenix Estate, in the Tarner area or around Hanover and Elm Grove. The project brings local people together and provides high quality, healthy and nutritious food, avoiding food waste. The food shop volunteers also collaborate with Phoenix Art Space to ensure that local residents have access to free creative opportunities. Family workshops take place in the shop during the school holidays and art packs are distributed with the food on a regular basis.
